Diagram image of a tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is a procedure that involves the removal of a tooth from the socket by a dentist, an oral surgeon, an orthodontist, or a periodontist. This procedure takes place in a dental clinic. Tooth extraction is also referred to as exodontia or exodontics.

Historically, dental extractions are used to treat a variety of illnesses. The process is done using special tools that date back several centuries. Guy de Chauliac invented the dental pelican in the 14th century. This tool was used until the 18th century when it was replaced by the dental key. Modern forceps were invented in the 19th century. Tooth extraction is a complex and difficult procedure depending on the patient and the tooth, a variety of instruments are put into play. Extractions are performed for various reasons, and depending on the condition, the dentist might consider it necessary.

Why is it necessary

Tooth extraction is the most effective way for dealing with a severe tooth infection or decay. It is also used in the treatment of issues that arise with the last set of molars. It is called prophylactic removal and is done if the molars are impacted. In addition, if you have advanced gum disease, it can lead to loosening of the teeth and significant bone loss. Tooth extraction will be the only option to manage and prevent the spread.
