After receiving dentures, there are things you have to do or avoid in order to ensure they last longer and keep their luster. Having properly functioning and bright-looking dentures gives you peace of mind. Everyone wants a bright smile, and with dentures, you have to do more to keep them looking great. Often, people who have received dentures will ask if they can whiten them. However, before we see if you can whiten dentures or not, let us see if they can get stained in the first place.
Do They Stain?
Dentures are fabricated of plastic material and for that reason, they can stain the same way your natural teeth stain. Drinking coffee, tea, and other colored drinks can contribute to staining teeth and dentures as well. Also, smoking causes these oral appliances to stain. The longer you stay without addressing stains on dentures, the harder those stains become, making them more challenging to remove.
To reduce denture staining, you have to brush them daily. It wards off bacteria and plaque. When brushing them, avoid normal toothpaste. Although toothpaste has chemicals and materials that help strengthen and whiten teeth, it can harm dentures due to the material used to fabricate the dentures.
Although the plastic material utilized in making dentures is strong enough, you cannot compare it to the enamel of teeth. As such, it is easy to scratch the plastic when using toothpaste. Consider dishwashing liquid instead or a special denture cleaner with a toothbrush. Also, consider soaking them overnight for an additional cleanse.
What About Whitening Dentures?
It is not possible for you to whiten dentures. If you use whitening agents, they will damage them. Therefore, brushing dentures with a soft toothbrush or denture brush is recommended. Doing this will prevent permanent staining of the restorations. Talk to our prosthodontist about denture placement and aftercare. We will give you all the information you need.
