Do I need Implants to Have Dentures?

Posted on 9/2/2024 by Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry
Senior in dental chair at Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry in Escanaba, MIDental implants offer plenty of solutions for those who have lost teeth. One of the solutions provided by implants is the ability to support dentures. Traditionally, dentures were not supported by implants. Traditional dentures were placed over the gums. If you have lost all your teeth, you can place dentures on the gums, which stick adhesively. Even so, it is recommended to have implant-supported dentures over traditional dentures.

What Are Implant Supported Dentures?

An implant-supported denture is a dental device that replaces multiple teeth at once. Unlike a traditional denture that sits on your gums, this type of denture is anchored directly to your jawbone with dental implants. Implants are simply artificial tooth posts that are anchored into the jawbone. The posts take a few months to heal and are later used to support dentures, crowns, or other artificial teeth.

Why Implant Supported Dentures Are Better

Implant-supported dentures provide several benefits. Unlike traditional dentures, they do not slip, offering a more secure fit. They help prevent jawbone loss by stimulating the nerves in your jaw, similar to natural tooth roots. These dentures look like natural teeth, enhancing both appearance and confidence. They also restore oral health and functionality, allowing you to eat and speak more comfortably. Moreover, implant-supported dentures are more durable and have a longer lifespan than traditional ones.

How to Maintain Dentures

Proper maintenance is crucial for ensuring your dentures last as long as possible. Whether you choose to go with implant-supported dentures or not, care is vital. You must keep them in excellent condition and clean your dentures at least twice daily. If you have removable dentures, soak them overnight in a denture solution. For fixed dentures, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. It is also advised to thoroughly brush and floss around your dental implants.

While you may use removable dentures, they have disadvantages, such as slipping out and hampering speech. Implant-supported dentures offer a better alternative. Whichever option you decide, you must talk to a dentist. Please set up an appointment to speak to our prosthodontist about your options.
