Dentures are created from molds of your mouth, which help to ensure a proper fit, however, dentures can also be the source of significant pain. Here are some of the most common causes.
First Time
If it is your first time with dentures, it will take some time to get used to them. After all, you have a brand-new appliance in your mouth that you are not used to. As you practice normal tasks, like eating and speaking, you may have some slipping, which then causes rubbing, leading to sores and pain.
Improper Fit
Your dentures may not fit properly for a couple of different reasons. One is when your dentures are first made. You may think that they are comfortable at the office, but then get home and realize that they don't fit quite right and slip out of place a lot, which, again, causes rubbing. Even if your dentures fit fine when you first get them, you may notice, after some time, that they are starting to come loose and slip more often. This is because your jaw changes shape over time, without teeth in your jawbone to keep the bone strong. Dentures are not flexible, so they won't accommodate jaw changes, and will need to be replaced. On average, a properly cared for set of dentures should last up to 7 years.
Not Removing Dentures at Night
Dentures are removable, allowing for proper cleaning. They should be removed every night, and left out, allowing your gum tissues a chance to rest. If you leave your dentures in constantly, you are essentially suffocating your gums. Not only that, but you are providing a perfect place for bacteria to grow, which can then lead to an infection.Dentures are designed to improve the quality of your life, not cause you pain.
