Can Salt Water Rinses Help Denture Sores Heal?

Salt Water Rinse Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry MI 49829-3900Dentures (a.k.a. false teeth) play an important role in counteracting tooth loss. As important as they are, they can still cause a lot of pain and discomfort - especially in the beginning. In fact, about 50% of people who wear dentures will experience problems in the beginning.

The most common issues include pain and swelling in your gums under your dentures, white patches of yeast in your mouth, a dry mouth, and gums that look like they're growing over your dentures.

Common Causes of Denture Sores

One of the most common reasons you could have problems with your dentures is because you have bacteria in your mouth. Sometimes poor oral hygiene or eating hard foods will cause your dentures to crack and the bacteria from your mouth can get into them.

This is especially true when you have ill-fitting, low-quality dentures. While you can't expect your dentures to fit like a glove, you shouldn't suffer from pain and discomfort either.

Caring for Denture Sores

One of the best ways to deal with denture sores at home is with a salt water rinse. This will provide immense relief as you adjust to your new dentures since it can reduce swelling in your tissue and pain in your gums. It also shrinks and toughens this tissue. Salt also inhibits bacteria growth in your mouth. For this to work you'll need to rinse every three or four hours.

Fortunately, it's easy to do. Simply add half a teaspoon of salt to four ounces of warm water, then gargle and spit it out. You can also rub your gums with salt for a few seconds before rinsing it off with warm water every day. Making an appointment with us to get new dentures can be a great experience. We can help you get comfortable wearing your new teeth so call us today. We look forward to helping you.
