Whether you're new to wearing dentures or you've been doing it for a long time, it's important that you know that soaking your dentures is an important part of maintaining them. Dentures are made to be used in wet conditions (your mouth) and therefore they're accustomed to moisture. Allowing them to sit out overnight will actually damage, warp and dry them out very quickly. Why Soak Your Dentures?Letting your dentures get dry can be the beginning of several different problems for you. First of all, when they dry out, they become damaged and warped. This will subtly change their shape and they will not fit as snugly into your mouth as they should. What's the problem with that?Well, for starters, ill-fitting dentures can bring about its own set of challenges. For example, sore gums, excessive pain, open sores on the gums and even infection. You want your dentures to fit your mouth as snugly as possible. So don't let them dry out. When your dentures sit out and get dry, they also become extremely brittle. If you accidently drop them into the sink, they are more likely to shatter if they're dry. Keeping them in water overnight helps keep them moist and less likely to break or shatter if you do accidently drop them. Soaking your dentures overnight in a cleaning solution is a good way to kill microbes and any bacteria that may be growing on them. Of course, still brush them nightly, but a good soak will greatly reduce your risk of getting an infection and reduce bacteria growth in your mouth. If you have any pain or soreness from your dentures being left out overnight and drying or warping, please don't hesitate to give us a call and schedule an appointment for an exam. Just like regular teeth, dentures can last a very long time with proper care. |
