Are Dental Implants the Only Restorative Option?

Posted on 11/20/2019 by Dr. Hallas
Are Dental Implants the Only Restorative Option? There are many different methods for regaining lost teeth in modern dentistry and orthodontics. A popular option is to get full or partial dentures. Dentures can improve quality of life by allowing a person to eat better and practice better oral hygiene, but they do have downsides.

While dentures are effective at restoring teeth to a person who has lost them, they are not so effective at restoring the overall condition of the mouth, especially the jawbone which can be at high risk of decay. If a person suffers from severe gum disease known as periodontitis, they can experience degradation of the bone in the jaw. This can lead to problems, including a weak bite and continual soreness and pain.

Implants Support Bone Health

Unlike dentures, dental implants have the ability to restore bone in the jaw. Dental implants are installed by removing the affected tooth and then drilling into the jawbone to create a socket for the implant to fit into. It may seem strange that drilling into the jawbone could restore it, but here is how it works: Once the dental implant is installed and in place, it does two things for your teeth and your jawbone.

With the dental implant installed, the new tooth supports the teeth surrounding it giving them a better base. During the healing process of the dental implant, the socket drilled into the jawbone begins to promote jawbone growth once again and your jaw will become stronger than it was before the surgery.

Promoting a healthy jaw is important and can only be done through dental implants. When a person suffers from advanced gum disease, the bacteria around the tooth can damage the structure of the jaw causing pain and irritation. If jaw degradation is not treated promptly and appropriately, it could be possible for more disease to develop.

If you have any more questions about the restorative powers of dental implants in the jaw, feel free to call the office and we would be happy to educate you further. Please schedule an appointment if you feel that you are at risk of bone loss in the jaw or if you have consistent pain of the jaw. We are always happy to help with any issue you may be concerned about.
