How to Pick the Right Dental Crown

Posted on 4/20/2020 by Dr. Hallas
How to Pick the Right Dental Crown Dental crowns are an essential piece of restorative work for mouths. Crowns have been around for centuries as a way to cover and protect damaged teeth. If you think you are going to need a dental crown in the near future, you have a lot of choices. Which dental crown will be right for you? Here are some suggestions for you and your teeth so that you can pick the crown that is right for you.

What Are Crowns?

Crowns are usually made of porcelain over a metal cap. Crowns can be used for several reasons on your teeth. First, crowns are used to cover teeth that have been chipped, cracked or broken. Crowns can cover these teeth and protect them from further damage or from breaking and causing more damage to your mouth. Also, crowns are used to cover a tooth that has been damaged due to tooth decay. Tooth decay weakens a tooth, and makes it easier to chip, crack or break. Crowns can also be used to cover discolored teeth, which makes them match your natural teeth.

Types of Crowns

There are several different types of crowns. In the past, crowns used to be made of gold or silver. It was even considered a status symbol in years past. However, gold crowns are prohibitively expensive, while silver crowns are cheaper. You may not want to try a gold or silver crown, because they don't last as long as other crowns. The metal in gold and silver is softer than other metals as well, and may not hold up over time. You may want to think about a composite crown or a porcelain crown. Porcelain crowns last longer, and they look the most like your natural teeth. However, composite crowns last a long time as well, and they are cheaper than porcelain crowns.
