How to Adjust to a New Set of Dentures
Posted on 7/27/2020 by Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry
Photo of dentures from Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry in Escanaba, MINew denture adjustment is about patience. Many denture wearers will tell you to take it a bite at a time. Getting used to dentures is a steady process, so it is helpful to know how to grow into your dentures so to speak. Here are a few things to expect during the process.

Adjusting to Dentures is Slow

You will be instructed before you leave our office, especially on the first day, to start out by eating very soft foods such as mashed potatoes, pudding, and ice cream. You want food items that will be gentle on your gums and not make you have to chew. Doing this can help ensure to a great degree your adjustment to wearing dentures is much easier. For the next 14 days or so, while your mouth is still becoming used to the dentures, it is possible you will have some increased saliva or some sore spots in your mouth. It will be very helpful for you to rinse your mouth several times a day with a warm salt-water solution. If the soreness does continue past a few weeks, though, call us and ask for an adjustment.
Be aware that an adjustment to dentures will be longer as well as healing time necessary if you had extractions or you have a full plate of dentures on your upper or lower teeth. After that, you will slowly begin to learn to eat and talk again, as having a foreign object in your mouth does make a difference to both of those. During this period, you should notice that your sores, if you had any, will start to disappear and you will be salivating less. It is during this period that it is best to start using a denture adhesive to help improve the feel and also the fit of your dentures. This will also help with your eating and talking and give you more self-esteem and confidence. We can recommend a good adhesive for you and one that is recommended and already tested by the ADA.

After about a month you should be doing fine and able to do most all of your favorite activities again, including eating and talking with confidence, plus enjoying most any food that you want with no chewing problems or soreness. If at any time you are experiencing severe pain or having problems with your dentures, please call our office so that we can schedule you in. From there, an exam will tell us what type of treatment will help most.
