Ways to Keep Bonding from Chipping
Posted on 8/24/2020 by Dr. Hallas
Ways to Keep Bonding from ChippingBonding provides an excellent way to improve the looks of teeth that show cracks or chips, or that are too small, compared to the other teeth. It can also be used to whiten discolored teeth and fill teeth with cavities. Bonding, which is made with a composite resin, will last longer when you take the following measures. When you take good care of bonded teeth and practice prevention, they can last up to ten years. Therefore, it is important to know how to keep bonded teeth in tip-top shape.

What Causes Bonding to Chip?

Bonding should not chip, as long as you brush and floss at least twice a day and make sure you treat the material with care. For example, just like regular teeth, you should not bite into hard foods, especially chewy or crunchy treats.

You should also avoid consuming too many acid-producing foods or drinks, as these foods and beverages cause erosion of the tooth enamel and cause bonding to break. For instance, citrus foods, pineapple, and wine all fall under this classification.

It is also important to keep your bonding away from pen caps and similar items that many people tend to chew on, as they can scratch your bonded teeth. Don't use your bonded teeth as a way for removing the cap on a pen or opening a package.

Never pick at the bonding, especially after it has just been placed. This can also lead to chipped dental bonding and should always be avoided.

What Should I Do If I Notice Chipping or Cracking?

While the above measures should keep your bonding in good shape, wear-and-tear can still have its effects on bonded teeth. If you notice any type of wear, schedule an appointment to have the bonding checked. Doing so will reduce tooth sensitivity and lessen any risk of dental decay.
