Things to Never Do If You Have Veneers on Your Teeth
Posted on 9/14/2020 by Dr. Hallas |
Veneers are thin shells of ceramic or a resin composite that normally attach to the front of the teeth. They improve smiles that show chips, discoloration, and similar imperfections. To make sure your veneers always look great, you need to take measures to keep them that way.
Habits that Hurt Veneers
When wearing veneers, you should not grind or clench your teeth, consume tooth-staining foods or beverages, or use your veneers as tools. Any of these practices can chip or crack your veneers, or cause them to wear down relatively fast. For example, bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, will loosen veneers and can break the restoration as well as damage the teeth below.
In addition, you should avoid foods that produce stains, such as red wine, coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, and darker colored foods, such as blueberries. The use of tobacco will ruin the looks of your teeth and veneers as well. Another no-no is to use your veneers to bite down and open packages or chew on pencils or pens.
What Can I Do to Prevent Veneer Damage?
If you were ever diagnosed with bruxism, you need to wear a dental device, such as a mouth guard. You also should consume foods or drinks that do not produce stains or discoloration, such as bananas, cucumbers, broccoli, and cauliflower. Steam vegetables to soften them to prevent damage to your veneers. If you currently smoke, take measures to quit. Again, don't use your veneers as tools to open packages. Stop the habit of biting on pens or pencils if you are stressed. Contact us immediately if you notice any chips, cracks or wear in your veneers.
