Why Are There Several Types of Tooth Extractions?
Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Hallas
Why Are There Several Types of Tooth Extractions? When people have a tooth or teeth removed, they often express surprise at the number of types of extractions. However, removing a tooth has to be done carefully and therefore requires different methods. The method chosen will depend on the location and reason for removal. The following information will give you more details on why the methods of extraction vary.

Why Are Teeth Extracted?

To learn more about the three main types of dental extraction, you have to understand the reasons for the process. Teeth may be removed because of trauma, or if a tooth has decayed extensively. An extraction may also be necessary if a tooth is broken but cannot be repaired, or has become severely crowded. Impacted wisdom teeth are also extracted, as are teeth that must be removed for orthodontic treatment. Now that you know about the various reasons teeth are removed, you can better understand extraction processes.

A Review of the Types of Dental Extractions

One of the most common dental procedures in the U.S. is a simple tooth extraction. This technique is used when a tooth does not need to be removed below the gum line. If the shape of the tooth and roots make a tooth easy to remove, then a simple extraction is the process that is used. During this procedure, forceps are used to remove the tooth. This is done after the extraction site has been sufficiently numbed. If teeth are impacted, or have not erupted, oral surgery must be performed to ensure the health of the other teeth. An incision is made to remove the impacted teeth. In some cases, the roots of teeth remain when teeth have been removed. As a result, the roots can trigger pain and other dental issues. To remove the roots, the area is numbed so the patient is comfortable during the process.

Regardless of the type of extraction, you will need to practice extra care during the first 48 hours after the procedure. If you need dentures or other restorations, it pays to know what to expect if you need a dental extraction. Give us a call now if you will need future extractions for a prosthodontic appliance or implants.
