How to Care for Your Gums as a Denture Wearer

Posted on 5/17/2021 by Dr. Hallas
How to Care for Your Gums as a Denture WearerWhile getting used to your dentures, it is normal for your dentures to fit loosely as your mouth muscles adjust to holding them in place. You may also experience increased salivary flow, but this should fade with time. Long hours of wearing your dentures can also irritate your gums, causing painful sores. For this reason, you should care for your gums as a denture wearer for good oral health. To do this, give your gums a break, keep your mouth hydrated and practice good oral hygiene.

Give Your Gums a Break

As a denture wearer, you should take at least a six to eight hours break from your dentures when you are sleeping to allow your gum tissues to heal from any irritation and soreness they may have sustained during the day. Sleeping also gives your mouth time to rest. While giving your mouth a break, you should soak your dentures in a denture cleaning solution or warm water to prevent them from drying out.

Keep Your Mouth Hydrated

On occasion, you may experience dry mouth as a denture wearer. Dry mouth could also result from medication such as decongestants and some hypertension drugs. If untreated, dry mouth can cause gum irritation from dentures and increase your risk of gum disease. To stay dehydrated, drink plenty of water or talk to us if your dry mouth results from medication.

Good Oral Hygiene

Dentures can introduce fungi in your mouth and predispose you to oral and respiratory tract infections. To prevent this, you should brush your teeth, gums, and tongue with toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush to remove food debris before putting back your dentures. You should also brush your dentures to remove bacteria and food debris. Good oral hygiene coupled with routine dental exams prevents plaque accumulation that can cause infection and bad breath.
