Am I a candidate for a Bone Graft?

Posted on 10/18/2021 by Dr. Hallas
Am I a candidate for a Bone Graft?Bone graft has a procedure that involves the use of bone graft material to replace the lost bone in the jaw as well as to allow regeneration stimulation. There is graft material used and this is integrated into the native bone during development. Several materials are used for grafting purposes. Autograft is made from the patient's bone tissue and can be from other body parts such as the hip, chin, or even the shin. Some allografts are from human donors, this is mostly the cadaver bone tested and rendered to be free from diseases and is immune–neutral. Xenografts are from inorganic parts of animal bones mostly cows. There are other artificial grafts such as alloplastic made of mineral bones and there are ceramic-based grafts that have other materials like calcium and bioactive glass.

When do I need a Bone Graft?

Whenever one needs to have dental implants then they require enough bone volume to support the implants. This makes them have a high success rate and for them to function well. The procedure of bone grafting helps to support the tissues and prevent them from collapsing in presence of bone or soft tissue. Through the biochemical process, the body is forced to believe and recognize the graft as a real bone.

Good Candidates Bone Graft

The bone grafting procedure replaces lost bone in the jaw. Those who need the grafting process are those who have lost the bone organization along the jawbone anchoring the teeth. Bone loss mostly occurs due to missing teeth or teeth. Teeth loss is caused by periodontal gum disease, mouth trauma, or even extraction. If you have lost bone due to the factors then you are a candidate for bone grafting.
