Teeth whitening is a dental procedure you will need when your chompers are discolored. The protocols for teeth whitening vary greatly from one individual to another based on the starting tooth color as well as the diet. Often, there are two stages our prosthodontist will apply and they are the initial whitening followed by regular maintenance. People who love coffee, cola, or dark beverages may need to whiten their teeth more frequently compared to the others. While teeth whitening solutions are easier and more convenient nowadays, going overboard can put the teeth at risk for issues such as permanent damage to the enamel.
How Often to Get Teeth Whitening
If you are receiving in-office bleaching, you want to do it once a year at most. Some people while have teeth whitening after every six months. However, if your teeth are at risk of staining, for instance, if you are a smoker or drink dark beverages frequently, you could be out for whitening after every three months. Our prosthodontic team recommends that you get professional teeth whitening because inappropriate use of at-home whitening kits can pose dangers to your teeth and gums or even nerves. Once you undergo teeth whitening, you may need some touch up at least once every few months.
Before you get a teeth whitening procedure, our prosthodontist will examine and clean your teeth and gums. This ensures that there are no gum problems or cavities. Teeth whitening can only be done on healthy teeth and gums, hence the need for treatment of any underlying issue such as gum disease or tooth decay.
Preventing Frequent Teeth Whitening
Make sure you avoid foods and drinks likely to stain your teeth. Smoking is not the only thing that causes yellow teeth. Foods and drinks such as red wine, coffee, cola, marinara sauce, berries, and tea can stain your teeth. So limit the intake of these beverages and foods and drink plenty of water when eating or drinking. Also, brush your teeth after every meal. Keep reusable straws on hand as they can help avoid damage to the teeth from harmful drinks. To find out how often you should whiten your teeth, talk to our prosthodontic team.
