Dental Crowns

3D images of two dental crowns. Dental crowns are custom made caps designed to cover and restore damaged or weakened teeth. They are crafted from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal, or resin. These different materials mimic the appearance and strength of natural teeth, which makes them an ideal solution for teeth compromised by decay, fractures, or large fillings. Keeping as much of a natural tooth as possible, and restoring it with a crown, is always preferred over extraction. Crowns are custom made to match the patient's natural teeth. They restore both the form and function of our patient's smiles.

The crown placement process starts when we reshape the compromised tooth, take impressions, and have a crown custom made to fit seamlessly over the existing tooth structure. Dental crowns enhance the tooth's appearance, as well as improve its durability. This allows our patients to restore the form and function of their smile, and prevent further dental issues. Crowns may be used to protect a root canal, or to anchor a dental bridge, they are a versatile and effective treatment for damaged or decayed teeth.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are protective covers that encase a damaged or decayed tooth. The crown restores the shape, size, strength, and appearance of the tooth. It is often the best option to preserve the natural tooth structure, rather than extracting the tooth and replacing it with another restoration. Each crown is custom made to fit over the entire visible portion of the tooth, and to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the patient's teeth. Crowns are made with materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination to ensure durability, and a natural look.

Dental crowns are used for a variety of dental issues. They are used to protect a weakened tooth from further damage, or a crown can restore a broken tooth. Crowns are also used to support a tooth with a large filling, hold a dental bridge in place, cover misshapen or discolored teeth, or to cover a dental implant. Dental crowns provide a strong and seamless solution. They restore the function and health of our patient's smiles, and prevent further dental issues.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns come in many different types. Each one is designed for different patient's needs and preferences. In addition, each type of crown has different applications. These specific functions allow us to tailor treatments to each individual patient for optimal long term oral health, and appearance.

Porcelain crowns are popular for their appearance, they blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. This makes them ideal to restore visible teeth in the front of the mouth. Ceramic crowns are similar to porcelain, they have an excellent appearance, and are free of any metal components. This makes them the best option for patients with allergies. Metal crowns are made from gold or other metal alloys, and they provide exceptional strength and durability. The strength of metal is best for molars that endure heavy chewing forces.

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns combine the strength of metal with the appearance of porcelain. This combination offers a best of both worlds solution for both front and back teeth. Resin crowns are more affordable than other materials. However, they may wear faster, and need to be replaced sooner.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are a popular choice for dental restorations because they closely resemble natural teeth. These crowns offer a translucent light reflection that is strikingly similar to natural tooth enamel. Because of this, porcelain crowns are an excellent option for restoring front teeth. In addition, porcelain crowns are highly biocompatible, which minimizes the risk of allergic reactions or gum irritation. They are durable, resistant to stains, and provide a long lasting solution for damaged or discolored teeth.

The process of placing a porcelain crown starts with reshaping the affected tooth, taking an impression, and custom making the crown to ensure a perfect fit and natural look. They are not as strong as metal crowns, but a porcelain crown's superior appearance makes it the best choice for patients looking for the most natural looking restoration.

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns are used for their strength and durability. This makes metal the ideal choice to restore molars and other teeth that endure strong chewing forces. Metal crowns are made from gold alloys, base metal alloys, or other biocompatible metals. These crowns are resistant to wear and are less prone to chipping or breaking when compared to other materials. Although their metallic sheen alters the appearance of the visible front teeth, metal crowns require the least amount of tooth alteration. More of the natural tooth is preserved with a metal crown.

The longevity and durability of metal crowns makes them a long term, cost effective option for dental restorations. They provide reliable long term protection for compromised teeth. When our patients value function and strength over aesthetics, metal crowns offer the best solution for them.

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns combine the perfect appearance of porcelain with the strength and durability of metal. This combination offers a more versatile solution for dental restorations. PFM crowns feature a metal core that provides enhanced durability, and that metal core is covered by a layer of porcelain that mimics the translucent appearance of real, natural teeth. This combination of strength and a beautiful appearance makes PFM crowns an excellent choice for both front and back teeth. Porcelain fused to metal crowns provide the necessary strength against chewing to support molars, and they maintain a natural look.

The metal base ensures a secure fit and long lasting durability, and the porcelain exterior can be color matched to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural teeth. In the past, the metal substructure of a PFM crown created a slight grayish hue at the gum line, but advancements in dental technology have minimized this issue. PFM crowns are a gorgeous and reliable option for patients seeking a balance between form and function from their dental restorations.
