Longevity of Veneers
Escanaba, MI

Rendering of jaw with porcelain veneer on tooth at Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry in Escanaba, MI 49829-3900Dental veneers are customized coverings made of composite resin or porcelain that fit over a damaged tooth to restore its natural look. They are used to successfully repair teeth that are decayed, cracked, chipped, discolored, unevenly spaced, or don’t align properly. Teeth covered by veneers look just like normal teeth, and the coverings are stain resistant.

What Happens During the Veneer Procedure?

During the veneer procedure, Dr. Lasnoski will take off a tiny part of the tooth’s surface in order to place the veneer. Then an impression will be made of your tooth, which we will use to craft the dental veneer. Once the veneer is finished, we will bond it to your tooth using resin cement.

How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?

Veneers made out of porcelain hold up well and can last up to 15 years if you take care of them. They may need repair or replacement if they suffer too much damage or wear, so the owner must act proactively to preserve them.

Since veneers need replacement every several years, they are not designed as a permanent solution for dental complications. However, proper care will go a long way toward preserving them.

Caring for Veneers

Here are some ways to properly care for your veneers.

Observe Good Oral Care

As a general rule, you should observe proper dental hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day will prevent stains along with other problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Schedule bi-annual appointments at our office so we can give you professional cleaning exams, cleaning your teeth in ways you can’t.

Don’t Bite Hard Objects

The same bad habits that damage your regular teeth are also harmful to veneers. Nail biting, chewing ice, pencils, or other hard objects can chip both veneers and teeth. Using your teeth as tools expose you to germs unnecessarily and can damage the veneers. Drinking excessive amounts of wine, tea, or coffee can also stain them.

Wear a Mouth Guard

If you play contact sports like football or rugby, wear a mouthguard. If you get hit in the face it can damage or crack your veneers as well as your natural teeth.

Avoid Grinding your Teeth

Don’t clench or grind your teeth, whether at night or during the day. If you have bruxism (chronic grinding of the teeth), talk with Dr. Lasnoski about it so we can adjust your treatment plan accordingly. We may prescribe a mouth guard for you to wear during sleep. You may not crack the veneers in this way if this condition goes untreated, but you’ll likely wear them out a lot faster.

Veneers are an excellent choice for those who want to get their smile back, but you will still need to take active care of them to prolong their longevity. One cannot use veneers, or any other dental implement, for that matter, as an excuse to avoid basic personal oral care. Veneers are a great boost to your smile and can last over a decade, provided you take proper care of them.
