Where Do Receding Gums Come From?

Posted on 3/20/2019 by Dr. Hallas
Where Do Receding Gums Come From? The most common reason for gum recession is poor oral hygiene, but it can also be caused by other factors and be present in people who take care of their oral health.

What is Gum Recession?

Receding gums happen when the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth wear out or start to pull back, exposing more of the tooth, including the root. Pockets form between the teeth and the gum line causing a gap where bacteria build up. When left untreated, receding gums can develop into more serious cases of periodontal disease and even tooth loss.

What Causes Receding Gums?

Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems and some people don't even realize they have it until it's pointed out to them during an oral examination. It happens gradually. Some of the things that cause receding gums are:

•  Improper Oral Health - if you don't brush twice daily, floss and visit us regularly, there are more chances that receding gums may go unnoticed until an advanced stage.
•  Genetics - gum recession tends to run in families or people from certain geographical areas. Some studies suggest that 30-percent of the population is susceptible to the disease, regardless of their oral hygiene habits.
•  Rough Toothbrushing - brushing your teeth too hard or with the incorrect technique can cause damage to the enamel and your gums can recede.
•  Periodontal Disease - gum disease or periodontitis is the leading cause of receding gums. The bacteria that enter your gums destroy the tissue and supporting bone that hold your teeth in place.

Other things that can cause receding gums is hormonal changes, especially in women. Pregnancy, puberty, adolescence, and menopause put women at greater risk for receding gums. Bruxism – the clenching or grinding of the teeth - is another cause for receding gums.

The most important thing you can do to prevent receding gums is to have good dental care habits at home. Brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and visiting us regularly can go a long way in preventing gum disease and receding gums.
